Rest is not simply for the wicked.

The ‘Rest of the Story’ is every day, every hour and every moment. What is the rest of your thoughts, your dreams, and you desires?

I seek and search and scrape to find a few moments of utter peace, daily. This is a new determination, perhaps a goal for the rest of my time on this earth. Seek that moment or two or four to rest and grasp the lovely. I have found so much in those moments. I will continue to look in there as I rest my mind from all the hubbub and wackiness.

Dear old Valentine,

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for releasing me from your grasp. This is a day to remember those sweet times. There were many more than a few. But, it also a day to celebrate the future good times and happinesses we will all enjoy now and in the future. We can and will prevail. We are strong and determined.

We don’t need tempestuous behavior and spoiled adults to placate. We need maturity and co-parenting. We all have our own stories and woes. We support and love each and every one of our friends. We celebrate today the absence of your drama, even if we are in the midst of some of that drama. Realize it may not in our home with us any longer.

We celebrate the martyrs today. And that we are not among them. We appreciate Geoffrey Chaucer and his courtly love that has tainted the hearts of women waiting for that white knight and of men searching for their princess.

We don’t need candy, flowers, dinners, and jewels. We need love and in its simplicity with the honor and commitments, respect, adoration and generosity of spirit that should accompany love.

With all the anger, drama, bitternesses we feel or have felt, we all want the same things: happiness and security for ourselves and our children today and every day hereafter.

We are not sad today. We are jubilant with the what-ifs and the gorgeous day that is today. We are pleasantly surprised by the gentle touches from our friends and families.

Mostly, we breathe a sigh of relief that we can breathe and smiles and laugh and cry and that these actions are our own. We love what love stands for and that it is good. We relish those moments of pleasant peace and gentle moods.

Thank you, my friends for supporting me when I want to bash heads, kick shins or simply vent and shriek. You are my TRUE VALENTINES, I love you.

Getting Organized

I have struggled getting organized. I am not there. I have fits and spurts. My goal is to finish unpacking this year. I mean I've lived here for a long time. I may make it I may not, but I will try.

I am currently working with a plan:
1) mail... 1 stop. I had recently spent hours organizing mail and files. I am not quite done with old medical flies but the rest is pretty complete. I vowed never to do it again (this probably isn't true, but I can hope, right).. But, this week, I have brought the mail in and handled it. When I let the dogs out after getting home, I deal with the mail. Why haven't I done this before?

2) have a cleaning plan in the house (now I don't have Ellen's house)so I can vacuum or sweep the house on Mondays (I actually do it daily... have you met my dogs). But, I do dust on Tuesdays now.

3) Using the 2012 Declutter and Organizing - this has been working, so far. Today, I have to declutter a bedroom shelf, I can handle it.

4) Don't leave a room empty handed. This isn't as bad as you'd think. I always am moving stuff around. And sometimes, I pick something up to put in the donate box.

5) yes, that donate box. I have one. I have it hidden in the spare shower right now, because I can't decide where to put it, but it has stuff in it. That is a start.

Seriously, who was the genius making sliding pants white?! These are kids -- BOYS at that. They can't stay in a 'clean' room and stay clean. My child can get dirt on him and never move off the seat.

I know the decision maker on these pants WASN'T a mom or the guy who washes the heck out of those pants after games. My kid has ground in mud, grass, and other unknown icks into his new sliding pants. I use spray-n-wash, oxy-clean, bleach, and even dawn. Most of the yuck does get removed with a hot wash. HOWEVER, there is always SOME left over. I know, I know, it shows he plays and enjoys and has fun. I know, I don't want them sparkling white, but black or dirt colored pants aren't an option!?

Sigh, I am not the best laundress, but boy, he likes dirt. So, we will have dirty pants, yell, scream, cheer for both sides when a play is good, encourage, burn in the sun, sweat to death, get eaten by mosquitoes, eat popcorn, sip an Icee, laugh and love the day.

Of course, if we are ever in the majors this is the goal, isn't it?

Dirty pants show your efforts and that you have your eye on the goal! We may never make the majors, but we will play with all the heart and love of the game every practice, very game, and every time we just have a catch. We love the game. GEAUX!

How can he not be a sweetheart? He's got many moms dibbing him for their daughters.

What I deal with:
My kids are such sibs: they fight ALL the time, 'hate' each other, wish they were only chidlren (well, that is the older more than the younger), and would bet up anyone who said or did the same things against their brother/sister. I think that this may be true sign of love for pre-teen angst-ed kids, love to hate and never admit to love.

I make them hug each other. Best punishment ever. And privileges are ALL revoked until hugs are completed, WITH FEELING!

‎'Mom, I love you.'

Best 4 words! Sam held my hands during the funeral, whispered those 4 over his shoulder and then leaned back and added 'always.'

These words were uttered to me yesterday at the funeral of my infant cousin, Slayed Hayes Cole. My children attended their first funeral. I wasn't sure how'd they do, and they impressed me. It was not an easy day. 5 hours of driving with a funeral, 2 cemeteries (we visited the graveside for Slayed, Papa and Grandma's graves are at the same cemetery. On our way out we stopped at the kids paternal grandfather's grave and maternal great-grandparent's graves, as well).

I posted it on facebook and some responses are the words I wanted:

Joanne C: All the money in the world couldn't buy you a gift as good as that.

Adam R: It's a fine young man that can tell his mama that he loves her.

Melinda G: Has any momma put "dibs" on Sam for their daughter? If not, put my name at the top if the list for Becca!

Superbowl to the Green Bay Packers!

Great day for a Super Bowl.

I wore my Saints t-shirt. I didn't drink champagne. Scream happiness to people I didn't know but who were m best friends for the night. I didn't head to the quarter after the game. Run into co-workers in the Old Absinthe Bar later finding out, he was kicked out the absinthe bar for rowdiness). Did stay out until un-Godly hours AND make it into work on time.

Congrats to the Packers. I cheered for the commercials! But, I do love cheese.

Gunnar wants to play with those kids SOOOOOOO bad.

Ellie is my old lady, my sweetheart, my love. I picked her out as a pup. She was 3 weeks old when I picked her up and she talked to me. rrr rrr rrrrrrr, she was telling me all about it.

She was the most precious puppy. The perfect lab pup! I love her so much. She is 13 and a half.

Funny, today is my old dog, Ruger's birthday. We had him when I was a kid. He was an incredible dog. He would gladly let a robber in but he'd never let him out. He died my senior year of high school. I swear Ruger and Ellie are related somehow.

El, short for Ellie Sue (LSU, work with me people), is a love. She tolerates the kids and the younger pups. She will play ball until she falls over. She will tell you and the kids when it is time for bed. She is the alpha now that we lost Brook-Lyn. She took charge begrudgingly and with grace. She has done most things with grace. Her eyebrows tell epics stories and her tail can swipe any table of items. Her patience with us in general is great, but her jealousy is palatable. She hates others to get hugs and kisses unless she is involved. She can bark on command, but we forgot to teach her the command to stop.

She is truly a gift.

The Pan

My life is chronicled in the scars on a pan, which is an old lid to a roasting pan and not a pan at all. There are hundreds of scores on The Pan; each represents a golden memory to me. Each mark a moment in time, when my grandparents were still alive and loving me. Each nick a brand on my heart, a gauge in my soul. Each tally a batch of joy, happiness and a physical representation of the loves I have had and are lost to me, except for the precious memories I hold dear.

My grandparents made the holidays for me, for all of us, I think. We’d get up at o’dark thirty and drive in, my little sister touching me or looking at me or being just generally annoying. It was forever to get to Nannie and Poppie’s…. 4 hours. They’d wait for us. My cousins couldn’t open presents until we made it. I am sure there is still some resentment there. Christmas morning became easier when we moved to Louisiana. My aunt would call at the crack of dawn to make sure we were ready to go over to Nannie’s. How excellent to share the joy of Christmas with my family year in and year out, I miss this time.

My grandmother and grandfather would bake treats together when I was much younger. Nannie was dictatorial in her kitchen, ordering the ‘STIRRER” to continue stirring. Aside: Nannie, was dictatorial pretty much everywhere. Poppie would simply stir, but it was HIS hand holding The Spoon, stirring in The Pan. Poppie teasing and making jokes the whole time. Nan and Poppie taking a break from the cooking to enjoy their 4 o’clock cocktail of Haughton water, a low ball glass full of ice, vodka and a splash of water (just a good dollop).

They made all types of treats in The Pan and in their kitchen. The candies, cookies and treats were on a card table in the dining room. We’d steal goodies all weekend. All except the fudge; it was wrapped and walked out to the garage freezer and stacked in perfect rectangular battalions that Robbie and I would destroy ‘sneaking’ pieces. There is NO way to make a fudge packet wrap the same way twice, especially after Poppie wrapped them. I know now, they always knew we stole fudge. But, I don’t recall ever getting scolded for it. We got in more trouble with the rum balls for obvious reasons.

As the oldest grandchild, I remember the most. I feel sad that my baby cousin, Kasey, has so few of her own personal memories of my grandparents. But, we fill her head often. I fill her stomach each year with fudge, too. My uncle, Connie Mack was bequeathed The Pan after my Nannie passed away in 1993. He uses it all the time, just as it should be. (He does say it was the only think he was left by ‘that woman.’ He says it with love but if you knew Nannie, you giggle.) I was given The Pot and The Spoon previously used in the confection creations. Annually right before Thanksgiving, I am LOANED The Pan. The loan is for 1 month. I have wrapped it up as a Christmas gift to return it, just put in the pan drawer, I even put it in his truck once. The rule is two-fold: I MUST give The Pan back and I MUST deliver fudge!

This is such a bitter sweet labor. I can’t make the fudge in any other pot and the handle is falling off this old one. The Spoon is still great. But, The Pan will eventually be scored through. What will we do for fudge then? Each mark, score, tally and cut are images burned in my brain and in my heart. I am thankful for the times I had with Nannie and Poppie. I love them more each year that passes without them. I have two batches of fudge so far this year and as they did, I share with so many. It isn’t the same, but I know Nannie would be able to offer sage advice on how to improve the recipe. I keep listening, one day I will hear the whisper of her advice. Until that day and well, until next month, The Pan, The Pot and The Spoon are together for their annual fudge making. I hope you enjoy the fudge. It isn’t as good as theirs but it is my attempt at finding that remembrance and offering that joy to all.

Tidbits:

1. The potato crop was traditionally planted in Ireland after March 17

2. Blue not green is the color originally associated with St Patrick. “St Patrick’s Blue” is used on Ireland's Presidential Standard or flag, while the Irish Guards sport a plume of St Patrick’s blue in their bearskins. The emphasis on green is thought to be linked to “wearing the Green”, a symbol from the 18th century on, of sympathy with Irish independence.

3. St Patrick is patron of fishermen in the Loire, where a legend associates him with a blackthorn bush. The saint is said to have slept beneath it, and when he awoke the next day, Christmas, the bush flowered, and was said to have continued to do so every Christmas until its destruction during the First World War.

4. A regiment of the Mexican army in the 1846 War between Mexico and America was named after St Patrick. Members of the Batellón de San Patricio included Afro-Americans freshly liberated from the slave plantations of the South, and the soldiers were granted Mexican citizenship afterwards.

5. The first St Patrick’s Day parade took place in 1737 in Boston, followed in 1762 by New York. George Washington allowed his soldiers a holiday on March 17, 1780 as “an act of solidarity with the Irish in their fight for independence.”

Sam likes TV. I am sure many children do. But, sometimes.....

Yesterday morning I had turned on Sports Center, as is my norm. I did turn on the living room TV, however, which is not. We find that TV in the AM slows down the leave the house process with the kids.

Sam wanted to watch cartoons. I said, no. He wanted to argue. I noted that I did in fact own the TV. He, in all seriousness, turned to me and said, 'Mommy, you have a family now.' As if this meant, nothing was mine singularly at all. Good grief.

Pet 10 Commandments

Received this today from a friend. After seeing Marley and Me this past weekend, it make me actually weepy.

This is the only picture of our pups I have on my picasa site, so sorry for the quality. I took it thinking yin and yang.

1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful.

2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.

3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being.

4. Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainments, but I have only you.

5. Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when you speak to me.

6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.

7. Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember I have teeth and could easily crush the bones in your hand, and yet I choose not to bite you.

8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, or have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak.

9. Please take care of me when I grow old. You too will grow old.

10. On the difficult journey, on the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can't bear to watch. Don't make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so.

Take a moment today to thank God for your pets. Enjoy and take good care of them. Life would be a much duller, less joyful thing without God's critters.

I meant to tell you. Tuesday we were going to buy our Christmas tree. We went with some family friends. So, the girls were all in one car: myself, my friend, Barbara, her daughter, Neely and Anna (the boys in another). We were going through the 'I'm starving ' routine. I told Anna and Neely if they were good we could all got to dinner after wards and if not, we just head home. Anna said, 'Mommy, why do you make me so indignant?' What? My 8-year old just accused me of making her indignant. I asked her if she knew what it meant and I will admit, she did. Barbara and I looked it up to make sure. I was thinking infuriated and incensed. Anna was thinking mad, angry and annoyed.

It makes her mad that I immediately accuse them of being bad even before they are. Seriously, I did not but that is her perception.

But, back to the main topic, she learned this word reading. But, she doesn't like to read. She wants to be smart like a friend of hers. I try and try to explain, she is, but would be even more so if she read more. We shall see. Perhaps her indignation at my chastisement will encourage her to read more.

Is it wrong to say, wow, that may be scary what she will pop out with then.

This is also the child who screams, 'Save the Frogs.' But that as they say is another story.

SNEAUX Day

A snow day in South Louisiana, it is true and it happened today - December 11, 2008.

We knew last night that it might snow. but, really, who ever thinks it will snow in S. Louisiana, seriously. But snow it did.

We got our first text around 6. My children have NEVER dressed more quickly or excitedly. They were out the door in less than 2 minutes, well, maybe 5. School wasn't officially canceled until 730 or so. I was already visiting Kasey to get a hair cut. Let's not mention the small tree that fell on Mack's truck while I was there (see below). Dixon took some excellent shots while I was gone (see above). I then abandoned him again to run and try and take a picture at the branch. Sadly, the weather was a bit more slushy and I didn't get a good shot. But, more of my travel story below.

I drove through Manchac Plantation to get off the main street.

Some beautiful homes covered in snow there. And, well, street signs, too.

On my leisurely drive, I came across Kip, he was a huge, sweet 90 lb chocolate lab. Kip had run right thought his shock collar fence. Luckily, he did have a tag on, so I called his dad, who came to pick him up. But, not before I decided chocolate labs are sweet as pie. Kip was soaking wet and LOVED the snow. He was running through all the lovely untouched lawns burrowing his nose and body, loving every moment. I am so lucky he had a collar or Dixon and I would not be speaking and we'd have ANOTHER dog!

While enjoying a few hours of quiet today, I flipped through the channel and found If You Believe. It was already 30 minutes in and very Christmasy. But, I love Ally Walker and who doesn't care about a highly stressed out editor nearing a breakdown, who needs help from her inner child.

I'd no idea what it all meant. I know several years ago, Dad had a 7. I knwo that over a 4 is bad. Radiation later and he was better.

But, then 3 months ago, Mack found out his numbers were 264 - OMG.

Here you go:

PSA test results report the level of PSA detected in the blood. The test results are usually reported as nanograms of PSA per milliliter (ng/mL) of blood. In the past, most doctors considered PSA values below 4.0 ng/mL as normal. However, recent research found prostate cancer in men with PSA levels below 4.0 ng/mL (2). Many doctors are now using the following ranges with some variation:

* 0 to 2.5 ng/mL is low.
* 2.6 to 10 ng/mL is slightly to moderately elevated.
* 10 to 19.9 ng/mL is moderately elevated.
* 20 ng/mL or more is significantly elevated.

So, as you can see, 264 is very bad.

But, today good news. His new levels are in and they are at 21.88. Still significantly elevated but much improved. I am so happy!

I love the gatherings of the Cole's. They are such a wonderful time to catch up. It is a time I am reminded of how much I love each and every one. Sadly, not everyone was in town, but we had a great turn out.

Sam and Mae played well together. She bossed him around and he did her bidding, as it should be in her mind. Jezebel was precious and such a beauty. Next year she will be bossing around, too. I can't wait. Anna focused on tree climbing and playing with the new dog.

Food news: Dixon fried the turkeys, Becky smoked a ham (awesome), Mallorie made the roles and cookies, John brought some kind of pumpkin upside down thing, Paula made a killer pie, which would put you into sugar shock just by touching it, Sarah made the broccoli casserole and someone made the grape thing. We also took brownies (at Casey's request) and fudge.

Thank you all and I love you. Miss those who couldn't be there, you were sorely missed. We are truly blessed to have this family.

Sam wanted a movie party. He decided on Bolt in 3D. We made the invitations for him and he picked some friends from school and daycare. Sadly, there is no Bolt cake yet. But, Sam was game with a Hot Wheels cake.

I think the pictures will tell you... it was a wild party. Who knew little boys could be so loud and crazy. Well, to be honest, I knew about the crazy. I hazard to say he had a good time. Next time, I will take the crayons to draw and cars, although, I doubt the volume would decrease much. I wish I'd been able to get the group of them with their glasses on watching the movie - hysterical.

There is no question, President-elect Obama did a beautiful job selling himself to the country. I am interested to watch what happens next. Senator McCain had a most sincere and patriotic speech. I was touched. He is a true American and I was proud of him last night. I have never heard nor read such a gracious speech by a conceding candidate.

A historical election and in less than 5 hours, we will either have a black president or a female vice president.

I am a private person and who I voted for is mine. But, I voted. I will tell you this, it was a crazy moment to look at the ballot and know that history would be made. Not by my ballot but by all the ballots cast last month, last week and today.

We are a Halloween family. We don't go crazy with the yard or make a haunted house (yet), but we love the season. Carving pumpkins and dressing are are all apart of it for us.

We Trick or Treated twice this year. Once at LSU: lots of kids and seeing the sorority girls and some of the guys, especially Pi Kappa Phi and their fun house. The kids LOVE that.

Our pirate, race car, witch and star wars booty (this is just Sam's....everyone got a ton). We had SERIOUS candy. The fun was watching the kids horde their piles for awhile and then watch the bartering for goods. 'Will trade you 3 laffy taffy's for a snickers bar. No, I want a Hershey Bar.'

The kids were very generous with us mom's. I had many Strawberry Laffy Taffies tossed my way, as well as Batty Patty's and even a mounds bar.

Oh my goodness, who could ask for better. It is bright, sunny and cool.

Kids could almost wear heavier clothes for Halloween night. Not that they will.

For us, we are busy, of course. I know of no family with kids who are lazing around with nothing to do. We are in the full swing of soccer and looking toward basketball. LSU football, while not a happy weekend, is still in the air. And we LOVE our Tigers.

So, you want 7 random facts... here goes.

1) I am an only child (well, of my parents). I have 3 half-sisters (1 on mom's side and 2 on dad's), 2 step-brothers (one on each side)and 3 step-sisters (one on mom's side and 2 on dad's). So, my family tree is pretty limby and wild, but I am an only child!

2) I do not like coffee. I love the smell of fresh coffee and get Mocha at Starbucks, but in general I am not a coffee drinker. Apparently, I am a snob.

3) My biggest fear is drowning. I am a great swimmer, but am petrified of actually drowning.

4) I wanted to be a Marine Biologist when I was little. I wanted to focus on dolphins, who doesn't. I, sadly, chickened out. I will encourage my kids in every way to follow their dreams, no matter what. Maybe one day, I will go back to school and get that degree!

5) I have participated in a marathon, the Disney Marathon in January 2004. Next time I do it, I want to run one. My next goal is to just run a mile. So, I have a long way to go.

6) I learned to ride a horse in Casablanca, Morocco. I lived in Africa when I was little and rode my first horse in Casablanca. I also have ridden camels in the Sahara Desert. (It is a dry heat)

7) I have a crazy memory for people's birthdays. Seriously, ex-boyfriends, people I do and don't talk to anymore, many, many people. Don't expect a card, but I will remember.

Pumpkin Patch

I LOVE Pumpkin Patches. There are none in Louisiana like Burts in Northern GA, but I love them all the same.

Usually, we go to Perilloux Pumpkin Patch in Montz, LA. Yes, I'd never heard of it either. The have a great piece of property right on River Road. The family gets to ride out to the field in tractor drawn wagon and pick out your own pumpkins. sadly, this yeah, Gustav destroyed the vines and the Perilloux's had to import their pumpkins from New Mexico. But, we had fun all the same.

We asked the Bourgoyne's to join us this year. And happily, they did so.

We rode out to the patch with Immaculate Concepcion School. They were the 3 year old pre-pre-K class. Oh my goodness they were the cutest things you ever did see. Our kids looked so huge comparatively.

A lovely day, which did get a bit warm out in the fields. It seems to take so long to select the perfect gourds, I know reality is that it is not too terribly long. As the kids walk farther and farther away from the wagon, images of long walks hauling a few pumpkins spring into your mind unbidden. Luckily, they carried their own. We even named 3 of our 7 selections: Freckles, Scratch and Rapunzel. These kids are hilarious.

2nd Annual Giftie Gather

Well, it was yesterday. We easily doubled our turnout over last year. And sadly, not all of those from last year were able to make it. JoeB is in Canada, Karla in Natchitoches and Liz, scarily is in the hospital with pneumonia. But we had may great additions.

Dixon had made pastalaya for the pig roast last weekend and we served it, white beans and some shrimp and corn soup.

To be honest, I have not taken the opportunity to count the number of folks in my house. Let's just accept MANY. I do know there were 12 kids under 15. If that helps.

We had folks from Seattle come over - Tory and Chuck. A few from Houston - Rachel and Shannon. Dennie came in from Shreveport and Laura from Lake Charles. We also had Opelousas, Lafayette, and New Orleans. And many happy locals made it.

Ok, so I love to take pictures. It is a known fact. I even like to show people how they turn out. Our local cool mag - 225 has a photo contest going on. Amateurs could send in 3 of their favorite pictures taken in 2008 in the 225 area code. I had a heck of a time picking which pictures to include. The 3 finalists I submitted are:

Fishing at the Boykins. Thank goodness Mack has a pond. The trauma that occurred that day is not shown here. Anna actually hooked a fish, but then we couldn't unhook him. 20 very long minutes trying to find daddy to help us release the little guy.

I love the Spanish Town Parade. This year was a GLORIOUS day on Spanish Town St. We attended with Cindy, Linda and the kids. What I love most is the shear amount of beads and goodies the kids get. It would take days to rack up like this in New Orleans parades.

Anna was between bead loads. The kids learned the value of a 'neeked' neck this year. They would load up for a few floats and then unload the beads.

This is a whole neighborhood act. They are great. There are about 50 folks who practice and perform for the parade. LOVE THEM.

Sam's First Deer

I know many don't like to see or talk of such things, if you are one, scroll past the next little bit. I only added a few bloody pictures. But, we are proud of Sam. Sam thinks he is now the Great Hunter. Anna is also a bit jealous. Her turn is next year, ok, Uncle Ben? Special thanks to Mr. Clay, who was awesome enough to let them hunt with him at his camp. In the woods, Dixon said the buck was very patient waiting to be killed, since it took forever for Sam to be calm enough to allow the sight to stay on the deer when Dixon had lined up the shot. Sam did pull the trigger.

I think the Cole's have a new before Christmas trek. We hope to go on rides more often in 2008. We hauled all the bikes down to the levee on the Mississippi near LSU and rode into town. It was about 6 miles total. It was a glorious cool day. Afterwards, we wandered around town, visited the fruit stand in Port Allen and then had dinner at Mellow Mushroom. FUN!

Well, Thanksgiving left us with much to be thankful for.

A great dinner in Jena with the Huffman group, aka at The Willis'. Everyone of import was there. We had a wonderful visit. We even got to see Patrick, Danielle and the boys. I simply can not believe how big Paxton is getting. And Carson, he is simply adorable.

We had a shortened visit to the Cole's this year (aka The Paul's). Aunt Paula is recovering from her early Turkey Day Hospital Trip with pneumonia. She returned home Friday afternoon with strict bedrest orders.

Shortened for Sam and his injury. There was an accident with Sadie and Sam's face. Here is a rough picture

When did this happen? I am so stunned. She is getting so tall (I couldn't find the pre-k picture in front of her door for comparison). I hope she will love her new school. Art, music and Spanish are all classes she will be taking and I think she will enjoy. Of course, there is still her favorites to Math and Science.

Of course, we needed a shot of Sam, too! He has slimmed down after his surgery a few weeks ago. Please note, the daily required snack before breakfast!

Meet Emmett - just a little guy

This is Emmett Kelly, my folks new Harlequin Great Dane. Their older pup, Titus, passed away two weeks ago. Luckily, the kids and I were visiting. It was a sad time. Mom always wanted a Harlequin. So, I checked the paper yesterday and one Great Dane was available. And here we have him - Emmet

Mom will be coming to get him early this week. He is a bit of a pup still, only 10 months old. He weighs in at 120 lbs. I would guess he will grow a bit more and gain another 30 or 40 lbs.

He was so well behaved in the car. Ok, I will admit, he drank some of my hot chocolate. Sweet tooth! opps!

He scared the heck out of our cousin, Lyn. The look on her face when she walked in the door was pure horror. Poor Lyn, she came over to watch the kids for a bit. Ben was in town and we all (and Kat) went to the Chimes East for dinner.

Ellie is only 70 lbs. I always think of her as a big dog. Poor El, she has been a great hostess dog. I know she will be happy to see Emmett go. She knows where to hang out when she wants a break from a rambunctious puppy. She will hide under the dining room table, where Emmett can't go.

But, Emmett is a Southern dog. A South Louisiana dog, he loves Abita, of course. Good Boy!

But, this experience has told me that we aren't ready for our next dog. I still miss Indy, but we just don't have the room. I think we will wait until we move.

I have been busy working on some sketches......

We went on vacation 3 months after Anna was born. The leaves were a little old but it was gorgeous. The falls were lovely and sleeping more thatn 3 hours was shear heaven!

A Puppy-love scene, Max and Ellie LOVED each other. She even visited Max after moving to Ga with us. I still miss him, he was such a good dog. Look how cute they are together.

I put together a year by month, I loved January and December most. January has the great Rhine House and the Leaning Oak from Beringer and Decemebr for my last live picture of Mike V.

Anna's first Easter, 2001 An awful scratch on her face but she had such fun with the eggs.

Sam and his frat look at Emily's wedding. Sam and Anna danced the night away. I love the large shot - tie gone, sweaty brow and partially untucked shirt!

OK, I really need to add this shot of Tom Cruise... see the resemblance... I know the shine on the important shot is bad but you can sorta see...

Bentley and Sam... two peas in a pd.... they really did look like twins. I love that they would get fussed at by the other name unless they wore boy and girl colored clothes like here...

Always a sad day, but a celebration of the lives of so many heroes. Thank you to all who have made the world I live in free. Thank you to all the selfless people who continue to volunteer to protect those who argue against them. Having lived in another country, I have seen and know what other rulers and governments dictate to their people. I will drive into town today and not worry about a roadside bomb or sniper fire and be ableto buy pretty much anything I'd like for that I remember. Thank you again for all the sacrifices made yesterday, today and tomorrow.

OMG! 20 Years! LSMSA - thanks for the memories

Well, here you have it, the horrible and honest proof of my 'old' age. MY SENIORS' 20 year reunion. I can't beleive it. I vividly remember arguing with Sterling, moving to Caddo hall (including getting a new roommate - Kimmie), dances at the NSU gym on the hill and history classes with Dr. Findley. Where have the last 20 years gone?

Nicole, Kathleen and I drove up in the 'Stang with the top down. We drove all the back roads and took our time. Lea's still has great pie! We drove around most of the weekend with the top down and froze often. I, of course, got the first sunburn of the summer.

Nicole and Jay. I wish we had taken more pictures. I hope someone will share theirs! Like JAY! So, except for a few extra pounds and a lifetime of growing up; we haven't changed a bit. Have We?

Charles and Cecilia Ottenweller. This woman would have fit into our school so well. Of course, I wouldn't have known her, since she is a tiny-bit older than me. But, truly amazing and an inspiration. I hope to know her better over time. Her strength is amazing, as of course, is her sweet husband. Who, FYI is still wonderful and has an awesome smile!

I actually spent most of my time with Cecilia and we had a lovely chat. We drove around Natchitoches and I gave her the mini low-down of places and things. Honest thought, nothing too bad. Honest ;-)

Sterling and Kris (I hope that is the correct spelling) and I. How wonderful to see Strel. We only had one small fight. I know, will wonders never cease. But, thanks again Sterling for lunch! He even wore THE RING. DoesenPlus1 would all be smiling. In fact, Shane Anderson was there, but I've no photographic evidence. We were all just enjoying the moments too much to think of such things.

I missed the sexy Rockette picture, but this is still cute. Jay Prince, Charles, Nicole, Kathleen (honorary LSMSA student), and Edward Dodge. It took forever to say good-bye. I know, I for one hope it will no0t be another 20 years before we see everyone again.

As always the off kilter shot. This, the most appropriate, shot of the weekend was the final picture from my camera. Thanks Cecilia, you are a great photographer.

Mike V - Rest in Peace

LSU lost its mascot on Friday, May 18. Mike the Tiger was 17.
I recall the day he was paraded around Mike IV, before being installed as the new Mascot. Mike IV was retired to luxury at the Baton Rouge Zoo.

I have not told the kids yet, since I am not sure how to tell Sam his 'Michael Tiger' is gone. I will take them up to the celebration when Mike VI joins the ranks as our new Mike. But he will never be 'our Michael Tiger.'

Mike V, thank you for your voice in the quiet and the hush. You announced our presence and our persistence against any foe. Your strength and beauty inspired us all and instilled in our 'enemies' fear of our prowess. I will miss your roar, yet, I know you are near. Thank you.

Sympathies for VT - prayers

I am so saddened by the horrific events, which occured this week at Virginia Tech. My heart is sad as my brain struggles to understand the reasons, the loss, the bravery and the selfless acts of some. My thoughts and prayers are with all the families, the school and the world in light of this tragedy.

This picture was taken last night at a vigil. So beautiful and so devistated: the angels, the wounded, the other students, the faculty, the parents, the school, the city, the state, the nation and the world - mourn. Weep at the loss of such talent - lost but NOT forgotten.

Pictures from Wildwood

We went up to Wildwood a few weeks ago. Just the kids and I. The flowers were gorgeous and in great bloom.

The azaleas are some of my favorites. I sure wish they weren't just plain old bushes most of the year!

Sam's tree is finally growing, just like Sam! And all of a sudden, too.

Spring is so wonderful down here in the South. Not only pleasant days and pretty flowers but rich aromas and sounds of birth and renewal. If you listen closely, I think you can here the refreshing sounds of the earth awakening from its winter lassitude.

Few new pictures: Zoo and Easter

We all headed for the local zoo on Good Friday. We went with the Freys and the Taylors. It was nice and cool and an absolute glorious day. We were there a few hours and wore us all out. We even bought another membership, so hopefully we will go back again soon.

Love this shot of the shades! Are they cool? Anna is so, 'Come on guys, smile.'

It is stinging caterpillar time in the South. We spend most of the day looking out for the animals we could have seen for FREE at home. The boys are looking at some form of caterpillar here. So intently!

Thanks to Suzie, we have GREAT Easter pictures this year! This is my favorite picture taken - I love the walk away pictures. I think I will get this one blown up and put it in the living room!

Of course, I look dorky! But I like the shot! Maybe I will get a copy for daddy for Father's Day!

Easter was so cool here this year. I believe it may have been colder than Christmas. I know, crazy. I hear there was snow in Texas, (thanks Casey) of all things!

Gorgeous Spring and Busy Days

It has been gorgeous here lately. I love spring and fall for the cool mornings. I know they don't last long, so we try and enjoy them as much as possible. We had a busy weekend. Lots of yard work and some housework. Mostly just lots of outside time.

Grilled both days of the weekend - yummy. Love burgers and grilled shrimp and veggies. We adjusted our usual dinner schedule and had everyone over last night. We even got a few extra cousins to come. Casey, Lynn and Casey's boyfriend, Clay, whom Anna and Sam destroyed with play and usual kid antics.

Worked on getting summer camps scheduled. Not sure if we will do it all but it is a start. I need to figure out which main camp to send Anna to!

I even got some scrapping done (nothing on the scrap room, but it will come).

I did two 2-page spreads for the store to show off some new paper:

These shots are of Anna, yep, that is auburn hair.... it was before her reverse highlight change to blond. I absolutely love the little outfit. My favorite picture is, of course, the butt shot with her bending over to pick something up. It was an absolutely gorgeous day! We visisted Jackson Creek on our way back to Denver from our Mommies of July (june and august, too) 2000 small reunion. Jackson Creek is where Dixon woudl go and do his summer dirt bike riding trips. These were in the opening where they'd camp for a week. The paper was so fun to use, out of my norm, which made it more exciting. I took the pictures before I included the title: Trekking!

Sam and Jake is there a better friendship out there, I don't think so. Last summer, Jake rode with us to swim lessons at Crawfish Aquatics. We enjoyed these trips, as you can see. Sam and Jake in the same swim class turned out to be not such a great idea, but the pictures are cute none the less. Chris was the boys coach, very cute and sweet. We will head back to Crawfish Aquatics this year for more training. Wonder how they will do! Maybe we can even get Chris again. Absolutley loved the frogs. I wish I had some frog pictures with the kids, but I couldn't find any. I know there are some somewhere. I WILL finish organizing, I promise.

Funny how scrapping makes we want to scrap even more often. I am ready for my room, but patience is a virtue right? How many points do I get for waiting three years?

Indy - we miss you

It has been well over a month now, that our pup, Indigo was killed. We still call him and listen for his barking excitement upon our arival home. He was a good, if not, attatched dog and we will miss him. Plug!

Always there to lean on, to love on, to snuggle into.....

You were always willing to share your space. You would scoot until you had barely a spot, but you'd stay near and simply be.... Indy

You were our first 'child' who loved stuffed animals and slept with them, snuggled on them, and enjoyed your 'babies'

So sweet, so loving, so LOUD! But, always willing and friendly, too friendly for some. Miss the plug and the excitement you had about any and everything.

You were our special pup, our rescued pup; we will miss you.

Gifts from Buddy

Anna and Sam have a great cousin, Buddy, the Golden Retriever. He lives in Japan with Uncle Tom and Aunt Deb. He sends cards and presetns adn loves them very much. We got a new package today. How that dog knows things, I've no idea. Anna got a great St. Patrick's headband and Sam got a leprechaun hat. Anna was ready to go and play, but mean mom made her pose.

This was all I got, but still she looks cute.

Ham-boy loves his hat. He will always smile for the camera, well, most always.

Then we jump into crazy Sam. And silly man, who wants to see each shot as it comes out and if he doesn't enjoy the shot, poses again and again.

Anna finally did it. Now there were regrets afterwars, but she was very brave.

We were just going to get Sam a cut and hers measured.

She hopped up in the chair to have it measured and Ms. Kasey said it was long enough and we could do it anytime. Anna asked to do it and Ms Kasey did have the time.

She had just enough time to chop the hair and even straighten it for us before her last client of the day.

Don't you think it turned out cute!!!

I am so proud of her. I love it short but miss the length, too. I knwo it will grow again. Daddy said it was a bit short. I think with the cut it will grow quickly and get to a nice length soon. It looks so heathy and THICK!

Spanish Town parade was Saturday, February 17 in downtown Baton Rouge.

Sam was not too sure about the whoel thing until he caught his first set of beads. prior to this famous catch, he didn't want to receive from anyone or pick them up off the ground. But, after that catch, he was much cooler about receiving, catching and even sharing.

I love these glasses, I think we have lost them already but they were so darn cute. Of course, prissy A would have no smiles for me with them on... brat!

This is the smile I was searching for. There was fun and happiness had by all. In what began as a cold and overcast morning, Saturday turned out to be a perfect parade day.

We really did have a great time with many throws caught, shared and hoarded. Daddy didn't make it. He was still a bit tired from his busy week last week. Me missed him but were happy to let him take a nap, too.

Gaining perspective.

Gain a new PERSPECTIVE
Challenge: to grab your camera and gain a new perspective!! We all tend to take pictures straight on, from our eye level. Now's the time to grab a chair and get a bird's eye view or lay on the floor and see what the world looks like for a baby just learning to crawl. You can also use perspective to dramatically show something's size. Shoot from below to accentuate an object's height or peer from high above to emphasize it's smallness. This challenge is gonna require you to move around...a lot! Crouching, kneeling, climbing...are you ready? Ok then, go get your camera and show us what you can do with it!!

Hello, I am alive

We are ok. Sam is finally considered healthy. He passed his strep test on Monday - YEAH!

We hope it will continue and maintain a strep negative test when we repeat next month.

Looks like we will be busy again this year. Dixon has lots of travel coming up for work.

We will be off to ATL in April for Crash and Burn's birthday and Erica's First Communion.

Dixon and I will get to go to Grand Bahama for our cousin Brandi's wedding. I am so excited. I need to book that baby.

I can't believe today is our TEN year anniversary.

Why is it when you are trying to become more organized you create a huge pile of crap that sits there.....

I am talking piles!

I decided to organize my closet, which of course, means I needed to rearrange my drawers. So, now there are two piles. I will get to them, I have to but dang, people! I need a professional.

I pulled out the Julie Morgenstern book and checked out the book on tpe: Organizing for the Inside Out...that could help right?

Weekend of scrap work

I just started my LSS university and have my homework from over the weekend.

There is a big ole blank on the right of the first set.... that is where a picture from Nicole should live... she is SUPPOSED to send it!

I just love the fact that UCM is near us. He so adores the kids and spoils them often. I realized doing this, I don't have many pictures of him and the kids. Will have to fix that.

Messy for me, but trying to work out of my box. I have a page for Sam but it is not ready yet!

On the last weekend of water sliding, Sam, his 'wife', Erin and his new woman, Trinity (on his right) hung out a bit at the base of the slide. I am not sure but I think he enjoyed himself a great deal. I also think we may be in trouble!

I am struggling with this word and the actions required to achieve it. I want to sell our condo. NOW! I know, we need to finish working on it, but I just want it gone and away. I wish we'd kicked my bils out earlier, but that wouldn't have been kind. Maybe not kind, but I could be out from under that thing. We bought it to help them out and have received little to no help from them to fix it up so we can sell. Gotta love that.

I am sad by the lack of brotherly assistance we have been receiving. I guess the All For One and One For All motif does not carry over into the new millennium and into the hearts of American boys. Sad.

Remiss

I know, I know I have been remiss and the last posts are blah.

I am still blah, but.... FOOTBALL season begins this weekend, so I will feel much better soon.

But, what about us? Well, crazy is a small word to describe my world. I have changed jobs officially. DH is changing jobs in a few weeks. Anna is in public school, shocking to us, I must say. She loves her teacher but still is struggling on the attitude and mouthy-side side. Sam is Sam Cole and that says it all! He is no longer SamBoy, I guess that is a good move.

We are biking each evening. DH got me a lovely new bike... it kicks a$$. He is jealous and may get something similar. Sam is almost too big for his bike but we hope to stretch is until Christmas. We raised the seat and handlebars last night. I have never seen such short little legs go so fast as watching Sam pedal. He is amazing with that little bike. Anna is also riding faster and faster. I so enjoy watching them grow.

As an aside, my dad had knee replacement surgery yesterday and is doing well.
